What is the main idea of your current event or article?

The main idea of this article is about President Obama naming Elena Kagen his nominee for the new Justice for the Supreme Court when Justice John Paul Stevens retires this summer.

b. How does the article show our government at work?

The article shows how the three branches work together because the President nominates the new Justice, the Congress approves of the Presidents nominee.

c. Are there any connections between your article and any of the questions in your unit? What are they? No

d. Does your current event or article help answer any of the follow up questions in your unit? Which ones? Yes it relates to question 6, because it is about balance of power described in the constitution.

Answer the questions below where you posted your article.

A. What is the main idea of your current event or article?

Main idea: How the constitution was made and the Great Compromise. Also, it is about why they ratified the constitution and how they amended the Constitution. (Cody)

The main idea of my article is that it helps you understand more about the bill of rights and the amendments that are in the bill of rights and what they did that affected are nation. (Sean)

The main idea of my article is to let everyone know what is going on with the oil spill.  People want to know what is going on in other countries.  (Katie)

B. How does the article show our government at work?

It doesn't nessecarily show our government at work, but it does tell about our constitution and how it was made. (Cody)

This article shows our goverment at work by showing the decisions they made and describes them. (Sean)

In my opinion, the government isn't helping the oil spill very much.  The government is not giving the engineers money to fix the well.  The engineers have to do it all by themselves, pay for many things themselves, and may even loose their jobs if they pay a lot of money.  The engineers will try and plug the gusher with a method called "top kill."  They will pump vast amounts of heavy mud into the leaking pipe in the hopes of slowing down the flow of oil.  Once the leak is slowed, they will inject cement into the well , with the hopes of "killing" the flow of oil for good.  (Katie:)

C. Are there any connections between your article and any of the questions in your unit? What are they?

The aticle connects to my question and Sean's: "Why was it so difficult for the Framers to reach agreement about how to resolve their conflicts?" and "What major conflicts required the Framers at the Philadelphia Convention to make compromises?". To Sean's question, the article talks about the Great Compromise. To my question, the article also states the conflict about representation and why they came to compromise. (Cody)

Yes, there are connections between my article and any questions in my unit. This article connects with the question of (How did the compromise of later adding a bill of rights affect our constitution?) because it talks all about the bill of rights. (Sean)

No because in my unit, it is about what happened in the past and it has nothing to do with an oil rig.  (Katie:)

 D. Does your current event or article help answer any of the follow up questions in your unit? Which ones?

The article helps answer part of the first two questions about one of the major conflicts the Framers came upon. (Cody)

Yes my article helps answer some of the fall up questions of all of the ones that talk about the commom good because the bill of rights make laws that make it better for the common good for our nation. (Sean)

Yes, my article does help me answer some of the follow up questions for my unit.  One of them is, In your own words, what is the "common good?"  Give some examples.  Another one is, Do you believe that government should promote the common good?  How?  Another one is, people sometimes disagree about what is best for all in your community.  Describe a situation where this might happen.  How do you think such disagreements should be settled?  The last one is, How does our government ensure domestic tranquility?  Do you think that the United States has domestic tranquility?  Why or why not?

Question 1.

What major conflicts required the Framers at the Philadelphia Convention to make compromises?

The major conflicts that required the Framers at the Philadelphia Convention to make compromises  were when Congress could not decide how many representatives to send to Congress and the states were not united and arguing. This issue was solved when the government made the Great Compromise, and with this compromise both the large and the small states got what they wanted: fair representation. Congress was to be broken up into two houses, the Senate, and the House of Representatives. Each state would have two representatives in Senate, and in the House of Representatives, the number of representatives sent was based on the population of the state. Another major conflict was when the problem of slavery reached disagreement. The southern states threatened to break away form the United States and become their own country. The reason for this was the southern states wanted slavery to continue, while the northern states believed it was unfair and unconstitutional, and needed to be put to an end. Some of the compromises that were made are the northern states agreed that the constitution would allow slavery to continue, the national government was not allowed to end slave trade until 1808, and slaves that had escaped to other states had to be returned. The southern states agreed that Congress would have the power to control trade between the states. The northern and southern states also agreed upon the three- fifths clause. This clause gave the southern states the right to count three-fifths of their slaves for the purpose of representation in congress.

Major conflicts htat required the Framers at the Philadelphia Convention to make compromises were that the small and large states were fighting about how many people should represent them in Congressand if there should or should not be any slaves and slave trade.  The large states thought that Congress should all be based on the population.  The smaller states thought that it should be a certain number for everyone.  Katie:)

Question 2.

Why was it so difficult for the Framers to reach agreement about how to resolve their conflicts?

It was difficult for the framers at the Philadelphia convention to solve the small and large states conflict about how many delegates each state should be able to send to congress. The small states thought each state should be able to send only one delegate while the large states wanted the number based on the size of the state population. Both  sides considered the each others plan as unfair for them. One delegate couldn't represent for about 750,000 people in the state of Virginia and the large states idea of each state getting 1 delegate for every 30,000 people couldn't work because that would mean states like Rhode Island and Delaware would be able to send only one delegate.

Nobody was willing to compromise and deal with the situation.  Delegates from states with small populations were afraid.  They did not want the larger states to have more votes in Congress than they had.  If that happened, the large states would have more power.  They would control the new national government.  Delegates from small states argued that each state should have the same number of representatives in Congress.  Delegates from states with large populations said that was not fair.  A state with more people should have more votes in Congress.  During the long debates, the Framers could not reach a decision on this issue.  Neither side was willing to give in.  The delegates were almost ready to quit and go home.  Finally, they formed a special committee to try to find a solution.  One delegate from each state was on the committee. Katie:)

Why was it so difficult for the Framers to reach agreement about how to resolve their conflicts?

It was so difficult for the Framers to reach agreement about how to resolve their conflicts because neither side of the conflicts would give up. For example, the case about slavery--the southern states who owned Southern Plantations in which one family could not run the whole plantation, wouldn't agree, and said they would refuse to be part of the nation if there wasn't slavery. Slavery was obviously wrong to the Northern states.

The northern states argument against slavery was that the Framers said that everyone in the states had the natural right to life, liberty, and property why should slaves be an exception.

1. Why was it so difficult for the Framers to reach agreement about how to resolve their conflicts?

It was so difficult for the Framers to reach agreement about how to resolve their conflicts because neither side of the conflicts would give up. Another reason why it was so tough for the Framers to reach agreement among the conflicts were that one group was always fighting for their natural rights life, liberty, and property. For example, the case about slavery-the southern state-families who owned Southern Plantations in which one family could not run the whole plantation, wouldn't agree with ending slavery, and said they would refuse to be part of the nation if there wasn't slavery. Slavery was wrong to the Northern states, since they didn’t have anything to do with slaves and thought that slaves should have the same rights of other citizens. Though, the Southern State-families were afraid that their natural right to property was being taken away. In the end, slavery was allowed in the Constitution, since it was the only way to make the Southern states part of the Union. Also, the Three-Fifths Clause was added which made five slaves count as three people for the purpose of representation (population). It was also difficult for the Framers to decide the conflict of when the people were happy with their state governments and didn’t want a strong national government. They just had a revolution to get rid of a powerful British government. People also felt that rights the states and people had would be taken away if the government became too strong and made unfair laws and actions.Another major conflict that I think was the most difficult decision for the Framers to make was when the Framers couldn’t decide how many representatives each state should send to Congress. Large states argued that they should have more for a bigger population, while smaller states argued that all states should send the same amount of people to Congress, so big states wouldn’t get to powerful. Both sides considered that each others’ plan was as unfair for them.CODY  (©2010)

Question 3.

How did the compromise of later adding a Bill of Rights affect our constitution?

The Bill of Rights is the first ten amendments to the Constitution.  It lists some basic rights of the people that the federal government may not interfere with and must protect.  It was usually the first part of a state's constitution.  Some rights of the citizens that most states wrote into their constitutions were the rights to vote in free and frequent elections, freedom of speech and of the press, representation on tax matters, have a lawyer if accused of a crime, trial by jury, protection from illegal search and seizure, and protection from cruel and unusual punishment. Katie:)

Question 4.

Do you agree with the Framer's decision to keep the proceedings of the Philadelphia Convention secret? Why or why not?

I agree with the decision to keep the proceedings a secret because the framers if the proceedings were made public the delegates would not feel as free to discuss their ideas.

Also, it would give time for the people to adapt to the new constitution

I agree with the Framers decision to keep the proceedings of the Philadelphia Convention secret because the Framers believed they needed to speak freely.  If people told others what they said, they would be less likely to change their minds because of the debate.  The Framers wanted the people to accept the new costitution.  They feared the people might not if they knew all of the disagreements that went on during writing.  Once the Framers reached these agreements, it was time to get down to work.  It was time to create a new constitution. Katie:)

Yes, I do agree that the Framers made a smart decision by keeping the proceedings of the Philedelphia Convention a secret because the Framers were in the process of creating a new constitution, which takes alot of brainstorming and discussing. I also agree with this decision because it is very important that if the information was revealed then it could get into the wrong hands, and the information would no longer be safe. Also, if the information got out, people would change their minds about what they wanted to vote for. This means that the Framers would not get the votes that they wanted. Although the people of the United States do have a right to be involved in what the goverment is currently deciding, the Framers thought that they should speak freely. They wanted to speak freely wothout worring about anything else. For example, the Framers spoke differently with one another then they did with the people. I compare this to when i am with my friends, I may discuss different things then I would with my parents. The Framers thought that if people started disagreeing then they might not feel as capable of writing the Constitution. The Framers said that they wouldn't tell anyone anything until 30 years later. Thirty years would gve the people time to adapt to the new Constitution. I think that the Framers made a very smart decision by keeping their decisions a secret fo thirty years or else our Constitution would probably be unfair and not as well written as it is today.  Haley Begun:D

Question 5.

Was the group that assembled at the Philadelphia Convention a fair representation of the people? Why or why not?

there were no women because men were thaught to be more important.no poor people because if they change to much they would not have much to lose.free black men and slaves were not educated about goverment.american indeans did not even know how mony or goverment worked.

The delegates were not a fair representation of the people. There were no women, poor, Free black men, slaves or American Indians. The State of Rhode Island did not even send a delegate because they were so against changing the Articles of Confederation.

The represenatives at the philidelphia conventionwere not a fair representaion of people because htere were no black people, no indentured servants, no poor farmers, and no women among the Framers. The Framers were wealthy, middle aged, and respected white men.

Yes because they were all from different states and all liked and wanted to be part of the Philadelphia Convention.  Three of the important people were George Washington, James Madison, and Benjamin Franklin.  George Washington was a commander in chief of the American army during the Revolution.  He was a great hero to most people.  His friends said his support was necessary for a new constitution.  Since he thought a stronger national government was necessary, he went to Philadelphia.  James Madison is known as the "Father of the Constitution."  He wrote a written plan for the new government known as the Virginia Plan, which called for a strong national government.  Benjamin Franklin had been a printer, inventor, and writer.  He helped our country develop good relations with other nations.  He encouraged the other delegates to cooperate with each other and work hard to settle their differences.  He was known as the "Encourager."  Katie:)
